L’appartement 22 artists in residency program is open for proposals for 2018-2019, we invite artists and curators to submit strong projects, looking the world around us, with clear idea about how the future art work (or exhibition) would dialogue/interact with existence. Artists and Curators: send your proposals to the Curatorial Delegation: appartement22.rabat(at)gmail.com by 20 February 2018. Required documents:
- Short Biography or CV
- Abstract of the proposal
- References or affiliation (optional)

L’appartement 22 is invited by ŁAŹNIA Centre for Contemporary Art to take part in a research residency in the context of Gdansk, Poland, in December 2017. The Curators Residency will gather: Karima Boudou (Curatorial Delegation, L’appartement 22, Rabat), Irati Irulegi (Idensitat, Barcelona), Paz Ponce (Independent curator, Berlin / Barcelona). This invitation is part of the L’appartement 22’ s programme of international collaborations lead by its Curatorial Delegation since 2011, in Morocco and abroad.

Statement from ŁAŹNIA Centre for Contemporary Art about Curators Residency:
One of the aims of the gallery is to engage strategies of contemporary art in the renewal processes of the neighbourhoods. Doing so we are especially interested in the social impact of different artistic activities. We investigate and support different forms of interventions but the question of a viewer is always the crucial one. Doing so we try to engage different promotion strategies to erase a borderline between the art centre and its neighbourhood.

The processes and outcomes of a large number of residences that we have hosted over the last few years led us to many questions, doubts, hesitations. Curators residency program that is planned for Autumn 2017 offers an opportunity to bring together individuals with different experiences for a discussion, brainstorming. The main focus will be the local context or site specificity as we find this theme both problematic and overused. We would like to question it and begin a discussion around this topic. Is it just to call it a tool for revitalisation? How can one engage in the local context when being a foreigner? Does the lack of knowledge of the local language act as an obstacle in engaging the people? How can you communicate with them? Is it possible to get engaged in a project within a month? Our doubts are built on the experiences of the accomplished residency projects, often observing artist’s struggle to develop a project.

Is the local context only a popular and attractive buzz word used by institutions, politicians and artists too often today?

About the institution:
ŁAŹNIA Centre for Contemporary Art is one of the first public cultural institutions established in Poland after the transformations of 1989. It is guided by its mission of showing and promoting contemporary art as a means of expressing universal values, and an element of world cultural heritage. The centre does so by showing the latest developments in contemporary art, showing the process of change that art is undergoing, engaging cultural and social phenomena taking place around the world, and educating the public about these issues by organising of exhibitions, artistic exchanges, innovative educational programmes, academic conferences, lectures, concerts and film screenings.

Mind Moves Matter
Mohamed Larbi Rahhali
Curated by Natasha Ginwala (member of the curatorial delegation)

5 June - 30 September 2015>
Opening on 5 June at 6.30 in the presence of the artist

Mind Moves Matter is the first exhibition showcasing a lifetime of thinking and work by the Tétouan-based artist Mohamed Larbi Rahhali. By animating forms of the everyday and through an insightful understanding of time that is at once deeply personal yet also extending to the planetary scale, Larbi reveals the practice of life as a constant experiment in art making.

In a Gesamtkunstwerk bringing together conceptual, scientific and artisanal vocabulary, we witness the minute interiors of a matchbox, the motions upon a self-made sundial and the intricate expanse of fishnets that encompass knowledge of the sea.

Workshop on Saturday 11th April 2015
3 - 7 p.m
With Aurora Pellizzi and Natalia Valencia
Collaborator : Othman El Kheloufi

A workshop led by artist Aurora Pellizzi and curator Natalia Valencia exploring the spaces of intersection between textile and text ; remapping some of the distinctions between oral and written language, weaving, drawing, text and song in order to generate new meanings and forms. Stemming from the common etymological roots of text and textile, and from their shared formal and conceptual use of symbols, pictograms, rhythm and repetition, the investigation probes their socio-political and cultural applications as vehicles for history telling and time-keeping, as methods for cultural and gender representation, and as forms of inter-generational transmission.

Residency ARTIST+CURATOR
Aurora Pellizzi and Natalia Valencia
25 March- 25 April 2015

Mexican artist Aurora Pellizzi and Colombian curator Natalia Valencia engage in a 3 week long residency around Fès and Azrou, inquiring on traditional textile and dyeing techniques. The project will develop a platform for knowledge exchange about techniques, ritual meanings and everyday implementation of the aesthetics conveyed in textiles ; these are understood as a tool for navigating life and negotiating between generational knowledge, orality and writing, time-keeping, functionality, community binding and sacred protocols.

Homage FARID BELKAHIA (1934-2014)

Belkahia was an active voice in the debates around post-colonial artistic modernism in Morocco, and contributed to the leftist cultural and intellectual journal Souffles when it first came out. For Belkahia, using the cultural heritage of Morocco in his shapes, materials, and technique was a way of rooting international modernism within the local context. Under his leadership, the Casablanca Ecole des Beaux-Arts became known for advancing a pedagogy that turned away from the inherited French model of easel paintings and still lifes, instead highlighting Moroccan visual culture and architecture. The pedagogy of the art school was closely linked to the artists’ broader activities. With the artists Mohammed Melehi and Mohammed Chebaa (both of whom taught at the school), he formed the Casablanca group that first exhibited together in Rabat in 1966. In 1969, these artists along with three other professors from the school organized the "exposition manifeste" in Djemaa al-Fna in Marrakech, an open-air exhibition that sought direct contact with a larger public outside of official arts spaces. Later that same year, a similar exhibition was held in the Place du 16 Novembre in Casablanca.

Encounter about archive
24 September 6 - 8 p.m
with the artists
Mohssin Harraki and Badr El-Hammami

L’appartement 22 proposes a series of encounters to interrogate the archive and artistic practice in connection with its documentation space and archives. These encounters will address producing, collecting, and preserving documents, questions concerning their accessibility and institutions, and the ways in which archives play a role in contemporary artistic practice and the historical construction of an archival practice within the particular context of Morocco. Mohssin Harraki talks about the origin of his work on family trees related to an historical documentation and an archive on the guides and schoolbooks. Badr El Hammami returns to the origin of his projects Mémoire 2 and Thabrate, after an oral and personal archive.

Registration is required: appartement22.rabat@gmail.com

For his first solo exhibition at L’appartement 22, Mohssin Harraki produces a new body of work which takes the form of an installation entitled Graft, Trellis, Tame. Each of Harraki’s three large drawings on sheet metal and his book of thirty drawings, also on metal, combine drawing, sculpture, and engraving. With Graft, Trellis, Tame, the artist expands his previous investigations into the family tree motif as a symbol of patrilineal history and its transmission, particularly in Moroccan public school manuals. Here, Harraki extends the botanical metaphor of the family tree, exploring the process of grafting as “a kind of forced education […] in order to obtain desired results, far from the nature of things”

An exhibition from 25th June to 16th August 2014. Opening 25th June at 18h30 with the artist.
Curator of the Curatorial Delegation: Emma Chubb

L’APPARTEMENT 22 Curatorial Delegation*
