Biennale Bénin 2012

Inventing the World: The Artist as Citizen, the International exhibition, the ten Special Projects and three Encounters of the Biennale Bénin 2012 opened at Centre Kora on the 8 November and the three Prizes of the Biennale Bénin 2012 were awarded to :

- Aston (Bénin): Prize of the President of Republic of Bénin (2.000.000,00 FCFA).
- Invisible Borders (Nigeria): Prize of the French Institute (2.000.000,00 FCFA).
- Nestor Da (Burkina Fasso - Ivory Cost): Prize of the French Institute (1.200.000,00 FCFA).
The curatorial project of the Biennale Bénin 2012 Inventing the World: The Artist as Citizen is structured as three complementary chapters inspired by the local context and artistic approaches:
- The Exhibition, brings together 40 artists with new productions and existing works, created in a former Supermarket, Centre Kora, and other venues in Cotonou, including Place Lénine.
- Ten Special Projects are co-produced with local collectives of artists and activists using the headquarter of the Biennale as a space for exchange and encounters in times of failure of the economic object of this former supermarket...
- Three Encounters of Oceans and Seas, a programme created for sharing discussions and research through different formats happens throughout the Biennale: from a three days session of dialogues, cooking and public discussion titled Recovering an Art School curated by Anne Szefer Karlsen at Songhaï in Porto Novo 4-7 November 2012; publised research online by Claire Tancons in interviews with artists on performative practices ; to an upcoming session titled L’atelier d’artiste et le monde - Géographie, Histoire et Intervention on producing artworks and experimenting with the notion of Artist Studio in different contexts curated by Olivier Marboeuf.
The Encounters provide a space time for the curators and artists to re-think methodologies of production and “editing” when the art world seems to loose world faced with large social and ethical crisis in the world. Intellectuals are definitely global, but more and more marginalised. The issues discussed are meant to address questions to the global art world and suggest new entries, or at least different angles to re-think the diversity of aesthetics and the unity of ethics as a a way to built a curatorial project in the understanding the artworks as active proposals to the world.
Please join us for the third encounter of the series Encounters of Oceans and Seas at Centre Kora, Cotonou, from 10-12 January 2013, with the participation of Adel Abdessemed, Meschac Gaba, Raqs Media Collective, Carla Zaccagnini.
